The Vaccine Checklist: Keeping Your Child Protected for the New School Year

The Vaccine Checklist: Keeping Your Child Protected for the New School Year

With every return to the school year there are preparations to be made. New clothes, school supplies, bus schedules, and health clearances. In California, certain vaccinations are must-haves for the return to schools and daycare centers.

Dr 2 Kids, Smita Tandon MD in Fountain Valley, California, can help provide your child with the necessary immunizations to support healthy classrooms by reducing the rate of preventable illnesses. Take the time now to review your child’s vaccination schedule to prevent last-minute scrambles.

Staying up-to-date matters

The close contact created in daycare centers and schools provides a fertile ground for the spread of infectious disease. Vaccinations are the best way to ensure your child stays healthy, happy, and in school with the fewest missed days possible.

Though federal vaccine requirements have changed, California still follows the recommendations of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). All immunizations with CDPH approval are covered by insurance

The vaccine checklist for California

Check your child’s vaccination record and compare it with the age requirements ahead of the registration deadlines required for their daycare or school. There are five immunizations required for enrollment:

Each vaccination has a required number of booster shots, injections that follow the original immunization to build the strength of immunity. You can find specific information on California Immunization Requirements here

Important milestones

There’s a base level of immunization that must be in place for children entering transitional kindergarten or kindergarten, and this base level remains a fundamental requirement for all students up to the 12th grade.

In addition, an additional Tdap immunization is required for advancing to the seventh grade. A student moving into the California school system from another state must also have the same immunizations in place, regardless of the requirements of their previous state.

Missed vaccines may need to be made up. Dr. Tandon and her team can help you navigate the California requirements and catch-up scheduling.

The vaccine visit

During your child’s visit, we review your child’s immunization record and health history. We’ll point out any necessary updates needed for school registration, as well as other age-appropriate vaccinations, such as the seasonal flu vaccine and the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine.

We’ll provide you with the needed records to ensure registration compliance, as well as details for students who require additional immunization for conditional admission.
